    So, not asking for you to cover godzilla specifically, but if you're ever looking for a new topic for a video;
    What do you think of the kaiju genre in general, and what are some things we can learn from them? Are they viable as a narrative device for issues like nuclear power or genetic manipulation or are they too campy/pro wrestling spectacle based to be effective?

    The 1976 version had Jeff Bridges, who was easily the best thing about the picture. Otherwise, it's a really painful memory.....

    King Kong is a US American trope because of the racism. Movies were always successfull in Europe because of the spectacle. The trope that meant more to me as a Brit was Tarzan. Tarzan returned home, but he more of a curiosity than a threat. He left the danger over there. King Kong was the actual threat brought to American shores.
    King Kong is a story for a slave nation. Tarzan is a story for a colonial nation.
    I want to know more about the history of Mormonism, because this looks very much like a way for early settlers to reconcile their relationship with the native population.

    I seem to think the Japanese blackface isn't really a thing because the Japanese never enslaved blacks so they don't have the cultural taboo aspect... and actually the Japanese history and cultural evolution is really interesting and unique especially as an American.

  • Khodexus

    2 महीने पहले

    Blackface was never "blackface" in Japan. It actually predates American blackface, and was a part of noh theater representing certain yokai and kami. In more modern times it has become a way to celebrate culture, and so still isn't anything close to what we think of when it comes to the term "blackface".

    I suspect you are right that '05 is too long; yet I wouldn't cut much. I love it, and imho it's Jackson's best blockbuster. Especially when compared with anything that followed...
    I certainly agree that the natives in it are oddly portrayed; though I don't see that as being so bad, but rather a different form of horror.

    I always thought that King Kong was a about dehumanizing people of color and white anxiety over the "black predator male" seducing white women. I was surprised you didn't spend more time on this interpretation.
    Also, the CC on this video are HILARIOUS the way they misspell some things. I believe at one point it captions you as saying you want to blow Kong or something really stupid. You should really check out the CC on this video, lol

    Now that I think about it, Kong: Skull Island probably wouldn't fit well in this video. A lot of it talks about the "Beauty And The Beast" aspect that is in nearly all of the Kong movies, yet that aspect is completely ABSENT in Kong: Skull Island. But at the same time, the absence of that aspect is what makes that version unique.

    Hey, Miss Lindsay. You mentioned that King Kong is unique in that he originated exclusively from classic movies, not classic lit. Back when The History Channel listed more toward, well, history, they mentioned that the werewolf, similarly has no definitive novel from which it got later adapted into movies. Dunno if the ol' Wolfman would be worthy of *e-hem* canonization, but I'd be curious about your take on him.

    This is why I enjoyed Kong Skull Island so much. Instead of leaning into the age old narrative "Kong is the stand in for the scary negro" it embrasses the idea that he is a GIANT GORILLA! And the people who go to the island see him in his natural setting and are themselves the disruptive force INSTEAD of the victims of Kong's existence. It allows Kong to be a force of nature as well a the "protagonist" to some degree, and the humans in the audience and on screen are allow to see this unfold together.

    The '30s movies, and the Japanese movies, are so deliciously hokey, I, for one, can forgive dated things, like the racism. In the 1978 version, the supposedly better special effects added nothing. But the original never explains how they get him from Skull Island to New York; that boat isn't that big. So, I think the reason they become an oil tanker crew in the '78 version is so that they can transport him in the hold of the tanker. How they get him in and out, since I thought the openings were relatively small, is another matter.
