Are Disney Villains Going Extinct?

Disney Animation Studios has seen an uptick in quality and consistency in the last five years... as well as an uptick in red herrings and plot twists replacing the traditional villain narrative. Did the era of the Disney villain end a long time ago?

Most Disney movies are becoming way too "meta" and that's exactly why the villains have way less of an impact. They joke a lot about old Disney tropes and at the same time they try to give more depth to their characters, which is great for a lot of protagonists (I really love Moana, Tiana and Anna) but almost always awful for the villains. That's because they try to make them way to realistic. They don't want to make the old one dimensional villain and instead try to give them relatable motives for their actions. Which can work if done correctly, but Disney isn't doing it correctly. They're focusing too much on the "See, he was the villain all along because villains don't act evil 100% of the time and can be normal people too" instead of focusing on the character itself. This is also evident in the live action movies, when the old one dimensional villains have now some sort of backstory but no personality at all. Live action Jafar is the embodiement of what's wrong with modern Disney villains: he has now a backstory which is not bad and works in the contest of the movie, but completely lacks the charisma, presence and fun of the original character. Old Jafar always looked like he was having so much fun when things were going the way he planned, new Jafar is like "oh...i did it...yay"

I do think there's an attempt at a thematic line connecting Facilier to Tiana, but frankly it's too subtle to be of any use. Facilier represents doing things the 'easy way' (it's his name, New Orleans is the 'big easy' etc etc) by cheating, stealing, and so on. Tiana's central conflict is, in theory, that all her hard work is being consistently ignored and undermined by a racist, sexist society. This suggests a milieu where you can (inasmuch as Disney is capable of it) think about how some people's hard work is not rewarded, how sometimes you need to take it easy or relax, and have Naveen and Tiana learn from each other and how to go forward. Naveen is much too quick to take the easy route, and Tiana needed to learn that some problems aren't solved just by work ethic alone - sometimes the game really is unwinnable and rigged, and you need to challenge the rules instead of going along with it. Facilier, meanwhile, ought to have been presented as someone who wins, then pulls the ladder up after him (he's seen considering giving a paperboy money after a white guy in a car doesn't pay for the paper, then deciding not to).

Shame we didn't get that movie, and we really didn't. The whole frog-swamp-journey thing really buried what could have been a really interesting story with a villain whose poisonous offers drive the plot.

Moana isn't that unique to me and I didn't relate to her at all and I'm an islander (ofc a bit modernized). She's a meh, her song is, well... and song of the ancestors is the soul of what the movie was missing for me. It's ok if u guys like it, but since I see pple sharing opinions why not put it out there.

I was glad to hear "one dimensional". I have been arguing for years that the correct usage is one dimensional vs many dimensional, not two dimensional vs three dimensional, which is a strangely literal way to express things. (Yes, the use of "flat" as criticism plays into this second version.) I always saw it as "one dimension" meaning having but a single aspect, while "multiple dimensions" meant they had many aspects, not that good characters were n-spheres or hypercubes.

I think that in princess and the frog Facilier and Tiana were supposed to contrast in that, while Tiana worked hard to achieve her dream through honest work, Facilier tried to achieve his goals through lies, deceit, and selling himself out (as in, selling his soul)

Elsa could've been a great villain with a redemption story. You don't even need to trade away much of what Frozen currently is to construct that narrative, either. Let her keep her catchy song, cool outfit, and suddenly-gained charisma, but change the focus of the movie onto how love can push you to better yourself and bam. Villain, redemption, better story. Plus, Elsa's bland af as a character as it stands anyway. What do we have to lose?

  • Anna Briley

It makes more sense when you view it from the perspective of people leaving cults. The newer villains i think are based on what people face when they leave a cult or religion. The bait and switch both ways, even the tragic back story element applies. I think it has potential. I mean, i would like to think religious bigots are pure evil, but really the only way to defeat them is through education and to a certain extent they have good intentions. I love Disney villains and other non Disney villains who are just as amazing like Mok from Rock & Rule, but I would love to learn why, because to this day I still don't know. There are real, cruel villains who exist in this world, and basing a villain on one of those would probably be better than basing them on the villians in our lives who ultimately have no power over us after we leave their cult/religion.

I fear that watching Miyazaki's body of work, as well as other "foreign" animated stories, has wrecked my ability to accept the traditional formula peddled by Disney. Especially in Japanese animated classics, "villains" are generally not evil. Most of the time, the protagonist ends up having to team up with one or more of the erstwhile bad guys to solve the problem, defeat the real enemy (usually an internal conflict, though sometimes a personified form of selfishness-as-badness"). I like some of the old-school Disney villains (because they're so over the top and very often have the best songs or one-liners), but that trend was old a decade ago.
