Dune the mini-serie is lazy trash too ; but when you crave more of a universe you scrap the bottom of the barrel and, well... half eaten cold pizza is still pizza, just scrap the questionnable part off and never bragged about eating it ! Why did I watch Underworld ? Because "Hey ! Vampire the Masquarade the movie ? I wonder what they made of it !". Was it a good movie ? Didn't care ! Serviceable is enough to taste the shallow flavouring of those instant noodle kind of products. Is it like ramen ? No, of course not ! But if you indulge enough it can aaaaaalmost evoke it. And if you never had tasted ramen to know better, at least it's exotic and seems like there is more.
The universe of Shadowrun (because it's all about that) was never put on movie as a whole. Johnny Mnemonic did the cyberpunk part (with the same success), Bright pitches the "D'n'D amongst us" one. Bright is just that : an over elongated pitch on Shadowrun (without cyberpunk and the sudden appearence of the magic in the world as we know it because copyright) and, well... half acting Will Smith is still Will Smith !
Shadowrun is a "mod" which insert D'n'D in Bladerunner. It's written in the late eighties by eighties geeks so yeah, orkish tribal trope = gangsta culture trope back there. Everything foreign from the writers was assigned in a "race". Elves are the wealthies with a divine sexy charisma, Dwarves are the hard working geniuses with a sturdy body and a smashing beard...
For the lazy culture representation in Bright (and all the lazifullness) ? The answer may just be in "let's make a quick movie for my platform with a well known star" from Netflix so "as long as it's evocative and shippable it's elaborate enough" apply.

    Good points though !

I actually loved this movie and never understood why others didn't. But now I see; when I watch a movie and see something I don't like I immediately start focussing on the things I do like just so I can watch a movie for the intent of watching a movie (having fun).
Thanks to this analysis I now see how dangerous my method can be; video critiques are not to be ignored but to be listened too and especially to be learned from. So thanks for this vid; I can now like and dislike this video simultaneously and I am not even being sarcastic here. You got yourself a new subscriber.

I think people are interested in the _idea_ of Bright's backstory, but in imagining for themselves what that might be, they've already put more thought into it than the writers behind Bright. There is no backstory in Bright to be interested in, but there _is_ a premise that a backstory could be written for, and the demand for that is clearly there.
Just sucks that the one opportunity we had for that this decade was so royally squandered.

The history thing(among many others) bothered me too. 2000 years ago? Would have made more sense for their story & their world for the war to be more recent to their current timeline. Like within the last 50-70 years recent ( going by social changes post WW2 in ours) Too many pop culture references for that much of an alt history. With good writers, Bright has the potential to make a good fantasy series & explore some of the ideas the movie introduced but never expanded on & build the world & develop the characters...but they probably won't. Carnival Row gave it a shot & well...mixed results.

Okay, this'll be an unpopular opinion here I suppose, but I liked bright. It engaged me, was it perfect no far from it, but it's flawed and as stated lazy writing lead me to question and a desire to learn more about the world. As opposed to disliking it I found myself wanting to be creative and try and work and see what world events might have looked like with an element of the fantastical. I also liked the class divides and the elements surrounding it. I felt excited by the potential for some awesome stories to be set around it. Honestly, I was disappointed by the McGuffin wand and would have preferred a fantastical world dealing with problems of race, class, and social divides. So yeah, the thing that excited me most about bright was less will smith and the orc but the setup and potential for other cool stories to be told. I also don't mind world history having a mix of fantastical and real events whose to say their alamo played out like the one in our history books. Flaws in the movie, totally, lazy writing sure, but I still dug the movie and would love to see the world fletched out and instead of an action set piece a drama of some sort or some crime investigation or heck a war movie set in that world would be awesome.

i was really disappointed that they did not just take the world from Shadowrun which is an interesting pen&paper rpg. set in the near future. With the end of the maja calendar in 2012 the magic came back into the world and people turn or are born as a different race its then set in 2050 as scify.
it would all make a lot more sense. the classic shadowrun has other differences as there are giant mega corporations etc. but it would make so much more sense. it would still have its flaws but i bet it would be better.

Generous interpretation: The dissonance and un-resolvability of this world is a commentary on the place of the fantastic as both a cause and effect of history. Humans exist on fantastical, narrative driven levels, as well as embedded in a particular context. This generates contradictions in our experience of reality. Maybe Bright is right to leave contradictions into its universe as a kind on modernist commentary about disjointed levels of human experience, or false consciousness.

This would be a 'reality is fantasy - fancy is reality' theam, but in a way which is not post modern. Rather than denying the ultimate existence of underling reality, as post-modern art can do, Bright expands reality to include fantasy. Ultimate truth is not abandoned, but is placed well out of reach. I have been reading too much Gillian Rose...

I always thought the Roman empire and all subsequent great powers that had to deal with the steppe people like the Mongols to have been so cripplingly racist if they were terrified of slightly Asian features, but then a friend of mine pointed out that the steppe people back then often used special cradles and head binding on their infants to mold the head when the skull is still soft, giving themselves elongated heads (almost like xenomorphs to give you an idea of the shape they where going for).

So a lot of rampant fearful racism back during the age of the steppe people came from the fact that to these cultures, the Mongols looked legitimately monstrous, but if you were part of mongol culture, then those shaped skulls were fetching and attractive lol. All a matter of culture and and upbringing I guess.

While Tolkien's description of what he modeled orcs after is problematic, perhaps it based off of the historical idea and fear of these warriors, and not just implying that slightly asian features = grotesque, corrupted human forms. (which probably still factored into it some lets be real)

@Chordeiles Major I really enjoy the Hollows series. It's urban fantasy, with a large disaster happening forty years before the beginning of the story that revealed the fantasy races that had been hiding among humans. At the beginning of the series you're introduced to witches (a separate species from humans), vampires, werewolves, demons, trolls, pixies and faries, though a few more species are revealed in the following books (don't want to spoil). There are also four different magic systems, though two don't come into play until later. I'm rereading the books right now and they're really engaging. The first book is called Dead Witch Walking.

it could make sense. for example some elf dude tried to take power with help of the orcs (maybe others) and is opposed by elfs, humens etc. also elfs are the rich (ruling class?) so they have the power to controle the media they focus on ork racism and devalue that ork dude uniting the 9 races. to keep in power. but sure it needs quite some creativity.

Well with the quality of almost all of Netflix's latest releases, I think its less big Hollywood and more Netflix is just a vacuum of stupid and terrible films and shows. Have you seen Schaffrillas Production's autopsy of the Voltron Legendary Defender show? Makes me question the current talent of the team who made Avatar, which makes me concerned for the reboot. I stopped watching Netflix when the controversies of their more "questionable content" hit the fan, such as 13 reasons why. It feels like with Netflix when they started making their own original shows and movies they hit every branch of the ugly tree.
