I have to ask: when she talks about coding, she shows the Easterlings, or people of Rhûn, from the LotR movies, implying that they are coded as something.
So... I have to ask: what culture are they coded as?
Because they look fuckin' sick in that awesome armor of theirs.

I mean that looks friggin' badass. The best I could guess is that they're some kind of ancient greece-samurai-arab mix. But they're also white. So... I dunno!

Bright's main structure very strongly resembles the tabletop role playing game Shadowrun, which is based off of William Gibson's Sci-fi novels.
Unfortunately the movie was nothing like what I expected, or wanted.
It was so bad I shut if off after 15 minutes

Bright: "Hey, wanna watch a movie where Will Smith and an orc are cops?"
Me: "Huh. Odd pairing, but sure. Sounds like stupid fun--"
    Bright: "ALSO, RACISM!!!!"
Me: " ... why you introducing heavy real world social issues into a fantasy action movie--"
Bright: "Don't think about it! Leave your brain at the door!"
Me: "You can't introduce fucking RACISM in your movie and then tell me to turn my brain off! >_>"

Bright for one was not about the world or historical events as much as it was about the extreme inequality and racial tensions. To make it mesh historically and be relevant to people now they took history and overlaid it with the lore from bright. There is little to suggest that it would not happen that way. In fact the show suggests that even with magic and mythical beasts the world be the same racist minority hating dump that they believe it is today.

I personally have an issue with the continuity of mocking history especially being from LA myself and knowing that the only truly racist people are those that say get out of Wats cracker or Gringo. Being born in the place and a quarter mexican, asian, native american, and caucasian apparently not being pure blooded is frowned uppon.

The movie though has a compelling story and a portrait of grungy police work, gangs, and a lengthy main character journey that rivals most on TV or even movies from 1999 and on. If you beaf is that they just didn't come up with original history you entirely missed the point of them calling out these historical events. They want you to relate as if fairies, dragons and elves are just as believable as jews in new york.

So I want to leave a little comment here about my perspective when watching this film.
An important, if not the most important part of this perspective is, that I play a role-playing game called Shadowrun, in wich the world is almost absurdly similar to the one of Bright. All the races exist, even down to the dragons, and you can find many similarities in their portrayal in both universes.
In Shadowrun Elves are a Higher class and are almost always seen as prettier, smarter and more magical Humans with pointy ears,
Dwarves exist and are mostly mocked for their height and, most importantly, orks are part of a lower class and often adapt a "gangsta like" lifestyle near the bottom of the societal ladder. Bit there are reasons to this: You see, in Shadowrun there exists the Fact, that History can be dicided into several different periods, apart from the ones that we already know, known as "worlds" where we live in the sixth world, which began in 2011, when Dragons made an appearance out of nowhere. These Worlds are defined by the ebbe and flow of magic, which appears and disappears in different time periods along with ALL THE RACES exept humans. This is explained by the fact, that all the races are basically part of the human race, but orls elves and all the other races only develop naturally, when magic is around. So around 2011 magic came flooding back. Elf babies were born and seen as nothing bad, as they were, as already said above, prettier, smarter and sometimes even magic. But the orks didn't just get born, they transformed out of normal humans and were seen as a mutation developed during adolescence, which is why there was so much racism involving them, and their partner race the trolls, who are not important right now. In some places orks were even exiled to islands with little to no support, queue the concentration camp vibes.
The point is, that many things that happened in the normal world have happened in shadowrun, but because there was no magic, there were no other races.
So all I'm basically trying to say is, it was a really fun movie for me to watch as i could just assume, that everything that happened in history, happened, between periods of magic, befire orks were a thing again.
That doesnt make it a better film, but it made it waaaay more fun for me to watch, than it appearantly was for most people, and I am thankful that there is a movie I can watch that resembles the Shadowrun universe and has obviously drawn inspiration from it.
Ps: Oh and Shadowrun also has a Cyberpunk thing going on and plays around 2070, but that wasn't exactly important to this comment.

I play Shadowrun so it's pretty much mandatory I like this film. I think a big problem with Bright is that they don't explain the universe well enough so it looks like cheap social commentary rather than a nuanced world with a long history. Knowing the universe ahead of time almost felt necessary to accept what's happening.

Let me be clear when I say that this was a really good essay, and I've been watching Lindsay's videos for examples of rhetoric in subjects I like to learn about. But I can't stop thinking about an improvement on the modern-car thing. Without getting into the history of cars and motor vehicles, I'm just thinking about how interesting the concept of literal-magic cars or vehicles with even a hint of elvish, dwarvish, or orcish build. And just have that be everywhere rather than just "an orc in a cop car listening to orcish music". Think of the Design options that would have made "We are not listening to orcish music" Actually a potentially funny moment.
Hey. I'm over thinking it. But if I can come up with all that in the span of the last ten minutes of the video, think of how so much better this would have been with a screenwriter.

If we were so tribalistic and species-ist, why didn't we kill the elves and orcs like we did with the neanderthal...? Or other non-humans that we competed with...? I mean, it's one thing to be racist, but we as a species are notoriously extremely violent towards any non-human that is trying to take our territory. There's a reason other humanoid non-humans don't exist anymore. We were the best at surviving and we took over everything. It just doesn't seem feasible for so many species of animals who occupy the same niche to coincide for so long in the same space. Lol.

I just discovered this video. Thanks, Lindsay! Yeah, we watched Bright and I KNEW I was going to hate it when he killed the fairy. Like you so aptly said: It's NOT because he's MEAN. It's because it makes no sense and humans don't act this way. Because we were at home and it was Netflix we kept watching it. If we KNEW Netflix would see this as us liking it, well....
So, this may or may not be related but the guy who created this is the famous creator of beloved films such as the original Ghostbusters. When he was a teen his dad "hired" him and to be an extra: his job, to HEAVILY make out with a girl who was also a paid actor while a car crashes through a house. As the car plows through the house they keep making out. He and his dad bragged/laughed it was his first sexual experience. While this isn't criminal it's not surprising that this guy grew up to:
    1) Feel like he can "build a world" but not bother to actually write a screen play. 2) This his world his genius and whine and stamp his food when people complain. 3) To not really get actual relationships and/or cultural/racial things. 4) Be accused as a sexual harasser AND allowed to be in charge of the coming up Ghostbusters.

A lot of your issue is with the show portraying racism on an individual basis and not a systemic basis. Bright and Crash take place in modern day and there is not systemic racism in modern day against POC. The only thing systemic is affirmative action which harms Asians and white people.
There was a good reason for systemic racism in the past and I’m not talking about slavery. Slavery was bad, but black and brown people dealing in slavery long before and still to this day which is never talked about. What I am talking about is segregation. Segregation or apartheid was just white people try to keep what they had built from being destroyed like it is today. Black and brown people vote for socialism, commit a far higher rate of violence, and have a lower average IQ. These are facts. Prove me wrong. All of these things are destroying the cities and countries with mass immigration into western civilization.
Import the 3rd world, become the 3rd world. Simple cause and effect really.

@Street Fighter Alpha The U.S. was created by white men, but does that automatically create a pass for all white people? There are a lot of white people that are just leeching off of the government and not contributing to society, and some of the immigrants are working jobs that some americans themselves don't want to do. Why would a person's nationality matter more than their actual contributions here?

John DC I do believe it is the right of those who created the country to determine who lives in it. Those who created the USA must remain the majority. Every race has great individuals, but as a whole the averages actually matter a lot to the success of a country on many levels. If we hadn’t allowed mass immigration and welfare we wouldn’t be in this mess. Isn’t it alright for Japan to stay Japanese and have policies to enforce that? Most countries on Earth are ethno states. It is only western countries that are being forced to welcome the world to what white men built and let it be destroyed for everyone already here. The life boat has reached its limit and it is sinking. All we are doing now is scooping out water with buckets too small to help. The USA was not created on magic soil. It was created by white men. Replace them with the people that created El Salvador and you get El Salvador eventually. Add an equal amount of the worst countries to the best countries and you end up somewhere in the middle. Yay for immigrants but you’ve ruined the lives of most of the US. Keep adding the worst every year and eventually that’s all it is.

    Very entertaining and informative.
Of course one problem with world building is when you have a franchise -- Star Trek -- that goes on for decades till it starts contradicting itself, violating its own canonical history. Marvel and DC have delt with this my relaunching their time lines for X-Men or Batman. Gundam has avoided this by placing many of the TV and Manga series in separate timeline/universes. JJ Abrams did do this for the last 3 Star Trek films, and given the canonical issues with CBS's Discovery, they likely should have done the same. Its one thing to build your own world, its another to borrow or build on another's world.

to learn more about fantasy that is NOT inspired (derivative) of Tolkien...please see the genre of New Weird. specifically authors Jeff Vandermeer (author of the source material for critically acclaimed sci-fi, Annihilation) or, perhaps the greatest living author of fantasy, China Meiville. Both of these authors specifically go out of their way to avoid Tolkienisms .soo yea Lindsay, i love you, but i couldn't let the statement that all modern fantasy is inspired by Tolkien slip by...that makes fantasy seem so..limited and outdated..its not..at least not the New Weird sub-genre.

I normally have no respect for the opinions of film critics, as they all seem to have lost touch with actual audiences. Their views represent the opinions of film-snobs of the most poncy tier and are utterly irrelevant. In fact, film critics appear to have no impact on viewership, so I don't understand why their jobs still exist...
In any case, I found bright to be enjoyably entertaining and have happily watched it repeatedly. It's a fantasy film, not a science fiction flick; it's OK if some things aren't explained or are unrealistic.
