The Death of the Hollywood Movie Musical

“Roadshows command premium prices and the exclusive firstruns presumably whet appetites for the subsequent runs at regular prices. And they justify financially the greater length, high costs, starrier casts, and whatever else is big about bigness. The roadshow contagion is now so epidemic that almost any picture deal which comes along is very carefully mined for its intermission potential.”--Charles Champlin, The Los Angeles Times, 1967

Id spend disposable income on all sorts of shit if I had any. Truth of Millennials is were too broke for roadshows and the like. I'm paycheck to paycheck and I apparently make twice the average for millennials if that stat I heard about our median being 14k a year is true. Im at 31k a year and I'm constantly a car problem away from homelessness. Half of the problem is living in California tho. Also cant afford health insurance and Im technically terminally ill. Gotta love the U.S.!

You talked about all the "big" musicals from the late 60s early 70s without mentioning Norman Jewison's "Jesus Christ Superstar" and David Greene's "Godspell" both from 1973. Then there's 1979's Milos Forman's "Hair" and from the same year, Bob Fosse's "All That Jazz". Where do they fit in with all this surrounding the death of the "musical"? I would love to hear what you have to say on those.

Reviews are more of a telltale to me than box office, since you buy tickets BEFORE you see it, though reviews affect buyership, this is strong on both fronts. Should see it. PG-13.

And while it got bad (29%) critic reviews, audiences gave it 80% on rotten tomatoes. It wasn't a masterpiece, but it was what they wanted to see.

After taking into account it's 100m budget, and rounded, Venom made *756.1 million dollars.* More than Spider-Man Homecoming (2nd spiderman only to Far From Home), by 51.1 million. Take into mind it's *standalone* and *not a marvel movie.*

The Greatest Showman and La La Land would like a word with you. Musicals are the GREATEST genre of film and will never die. Superheroes will be dying very soon. Also the studio system will be coming back to Hollywood after Congress breaks up the media empires and takes the studios away leaving them to be run by individual moguls again. Actors will go back to being under contract to only one studio at a time like Judy Garland, Clark Gable, and Mickey Rooney at MGM and even Shirley Temple at Fox. The system that gave us The Wizard of Oz will be back.

The weirdest thing about this to me is I lived in Japan for 7 years, and so many movies over there get road show releases that I thought it was some Japan-only phenomenon. Literally almost every domestic Japanese movie poster I saw, or TV ad, would be talking about it as a road show with a list of theaters and dates. And while Japanese movies cover a lot of genres and do it pretty well, I don't think they do any musicals.

Lindsay, what about the movie musicals of the 2000s? I was interested in seeing what you think about the short influx during that time? Especially when Chicago came out. It was in my opinion, one of the best 21st century musicals that took elements from the Originial Broadway Production and the Revival. Combining sex with vaudeville flashiness

Its funny to me that whenever a movie under-performs nowadays, the big studios always whine about mean critics, the Internet Culture ruining the industry or the audience not being ready yet to comprehend the genius of the movie.
Not once do they consider that their movie might just suck.

Firstly, the film is always a waste of time, money and effort, but it’s hard for us to admit that we tried in vain. Secondly, failures often turn into iconic paintings - such as Pandora's Box with Louise Brooks.
