True, true, but that wasn't what got people upset in the show - well, not the only thing at any rate. It was the pointless derailing of Sansa's upward trajectory and wasting another season with her being abused by a psychopath, just for the sake of "hardening" the character. But then, wasted time is a repeated motif of season five, so there you go...

Yes, we do live in the Golden Age of TV, or maybe at it‘s end. Especially when compared with Movies that have been experiencing a Dark Age since pretty much the 2010.
And there, too, we can see a process than (I would argue) started in 1997 with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which at the time was probably the most carefully c-structured and focused series in existence (literally, after Season 2 you could tell which episodes where gonna be important by their chronological order).
After Buffy, TV became increasingly sophisticated. Some of the TV-Dramas of the mid-2000s, while of decidedly varying quality, were clearly working up to the age of GoT and Breaking Bad.
You can even (possibly) infer a similar process for Adult Cartoons which also got more polished and artistically developed during pretty much the same time. Possibly also starting in 1997 when South Park started to air. After that the Scene Exploded with landmark shows like Futurama, American Dad!, Venture Bros! and Archer, starting a trend that eventually leads us to Rick & Morty or BoJack Horseman.
Although here, the trend is a little different. For example, Futurama was definitely an early high point and in my estimation might still outdo everything that came after. Otoh Rick and Morty definitely has that GoT vibe as a show that has broken into the mainstream of Popculture much more than it‘s predecessors.

I mean...they all went to watch LotR, right? And before that, fantasy wasn‘t really a thing in the movies, either.
And back before the 60s, when people started mass-reading Tolkien, fantasy wasn‘t really a thing in literature, either.
So....like...it‘s a process. Not an on/off switch where people suddenly liked fantasy.

It's like That John Carpenter anecdote; a fan asked him what happened at the end of the Thing and he replied, 'well, you're supposed to figure that out yourself.' "Of course the ballistae got destroyed, whats a giant balista compared to a dragon?"

Tyrions still sympathetic after killing shae because shae betrayed him in a way that would get tyrion executed. Also, shae attacked first, so self defense as well.

    • Dominic Bounds

      Dominic Bounds

      7 दिन पहले

That's the point: they gave her a Greedo shot first moment - when in the books she's begging for her life. The showrunners bent backwards to make Tyrion sympathetic, paving the way to him becoming a boring puff of incompetence. Plus, book Shae was just a prostitute who loved Tyrion for his money: when he got arrested, it was easy to bully and bribe her into confessing, and Tyrion took it personally; his brutal murder of Shae is meant to be another sign of his descent into full-blown villainy. In the show, Shae loves Tyrion, cares for Sansa, and only ends up betraying Tyrion because she was supposedly fooled by his "shoo the dog" moment. We never get her perspective, we never see how she ended up back in the capital after supposedly escaping, and we never get any good reason for her screwing Tywin.

I *think* the showrunners were trying to justify Dany's madness with the whole Targaryen inherited insanity schtick. Well, that's my impression at any rate, but as far as justifications go, it still doesn't work, because after The Bells she demonstrates the same mannerisms she did when she was sane and helping people. We've seen Dany at low points, and she's displayed rage, grief, denial, horror and despair: she's shouted and screamed, she's been in tears, she's lost all composure - you can't say she's insane when she's still in "confident badass mode," and there simply hasn't been enough evidence to say that Dany's "confident badass mode" was madness all along. Plus, the Targaryens never do anything subtle, least of all the ones who went nuts: insane Targaryens are not understated sociopaths or functional psychotics - more often than not, they can't function to any reasonable degree and have to be kept from hurting themselves or others. To put things in perspective, Dany's father *began* his reign as a jittery, unstable eccentric who had to be constantly reigned in by Tywin Lannister to keep himself from spending the entire treasury on ridiculous vanity projects; he *ended* it as a raving pyromaniac who apparently couldn't achieve an erection without watching someone burn to death and suffered from such a bad case of paranoia that he ended up looking like Howard Hughes because he wouldn't allow anyone to cut his hair or nails. By contrast, Dany actually seems to do better when she *ignores* the advice of her supposedly reasonable advisors.

And in the books, she had a good reason for this: she was just a prostitute that Tyrion had deluded himself into believing she was in love with him. As such, it took zero effort for Cersei to coerce a confession out of her, and Tyrion responded by brutally strangling Shae to death while she begged for mercy. In the show, she genuinely loves Tyrion, cares for Sansa, demonstrates enough intelligence to see through her lover's bullshit... only to become stupid, petty and hateful for no good reason whatsoever. And then they give her a Greedo shot first moment, just so SAINT TYRION didn't have to do anything morally ambiguous.

Funny thing about destruction of capital city. Everyone tells that it is war crime, while in real world, at that times it was considered quite normal practice. And despite of D madness, to continue warfare was the only way for army to survive at all, since power collapse this war created would soon make the entire country uninhabital anarchy state, ruined by power struggle, famine and overall disorder.

TVtropes has a page on this: it's called Franchise Original Sin. In this case, the flaws didn't appear out of nowhere - they were baked into the work from the very beginning, but because nobody brought up any serious opposition to them, they metastasized until they were impossible to ignore. Tyrion being sanitized, Jon being a loser, Arya being stereotypically "badass" without repercussions, Joffrey getting too much exposure, Stannis being demonized, Sansa going on about her "stupid dreams," Cersei having too many sympathetic moments and not enough villainous moments, the failure to follow up on original material, the dependence on book material despite contradictory changes to the narrative... It was all there from the beginning, setting the stage for the disastrous events of season 5 and beyond.

I don't care, it's not a f***ing ending if you just cut to black mid-scene. And I'm totally for ambiguous endings, open endings, bad endings, sad endings, endings that leave you thinking WTF, endings that most people hated like No Country for Old Men. At least it's an ending. Sopranos doesn't have one.

@Dominic Bounds This is my last argument because you clearly are biased against Tyrion. First of all, I never said it was good writing. I never said I liked the way things played out in Shae's storyline. I am saying that things have led up to her BETRAYING Tyrion and him killing her when he finds her in HIS FATHERS BED. In case you still cannot see my "point", let me recap the storyline because it seems to me you forgot. We already know that Shae and Tyrion fell in love. Tyrion was worried that his sister and father would find out and do something horrible to her. So to prevent that, he set Shae up to be Sansa's handmaiden. Shae ends up caring for Sansa, even going as far as to say that she loved her and would even kill for. It is important to note that this was all BEFORE Tyrion and Sansa were forced to marry. Shae made it evident that she did not understand how powerful Cersei and Tywin really are when she says to Tyrion "We'll fight them together." Tyrion, still concerned for her safety, set up a boat to take her to Pentos and set up a house for her there. When he tells this to Shae however, he says a lot of awful things to her to convince her to leave. That is why he breaks up with her. She is very clearly heartbroken, evident by her sobbing and leaving in tears. While he was saying all of this, he says "You are a whore". When she testifies against him at court, she says, "That was before he married Sansa. After that all he wanted was her." In my own speculation, I think she said that because she really believed it. Especially when Tyrion, in the scene that I mentioned, kept referring to Sansa as "my wife" and that he had husbandly duties to her. That is why I say that it is obvious Shae grew jealous of her. But she didn't testify solely because of her jealousy. Once again, she was heartbroken by him. That is why, after Tyrion spoke to her while she was testifying, she turned to him and said:"I am a whore, remember?" If that is not evidence as to why she testified against him, what else could be? And she threw Sansa under the bus as well because Tyrion made it seem as if he chose Sansa over her. Back to the original point of my first comment. In this video, Lindsay recapped the entire show for those who have seen the show and read the books, those who have only read the books, or those who have done neither. When she reaches this point in the show, she fails to mention any of this as to why he killed her. That is why I say that she is misleading those who have not seen the show (regardless of whether they read the book or not). She could have left it out simply for time reasons. Honestly, hough, I think it's just because she just doesn't like Tyrion and didn't mention these details to make watchers agree with her. In my comments I was NEVER talking about WHY the showrunners made their decisions to change the Shae's plotline. I have no opinion on them. I am trying to say that the events that lead up to Shae's death happened whether you like or not. And they are important, whether you like it or not. Or whether you like Tyrion's character or not. But when I made my original comment, I didn't think it was that big of a deal. You are making this out to be bigger than it really is and you are talking about things that are irrelevant. So I am done with this thread, and I will no longer waste my energy on trying to prove my point someone who does not care about my opinion. Move on. Thank you.

@Sophia ZstrawberryX "Pretty obvious." Shae never expresses the slightest bit of anger towards Sansa; she'ss seen encouraging her to eat following her breakdown in the aftermath of the Red Wedding. Her frustrations are all voiced at Tyrion. And they should be, because to be brutally honest, the Imp is a useless streak of syphilitic piss.

@Sophia ZstrawberryX Then perhaps you can explain something for me: why did Show!Shae betray Tyrion, even though she's been established as being clever enough to see through his nonsense? And even if Tyrion's poorly-written "shoo the dog" moment was enough to get her to hate him, then why did she throw Sansa under the bus as well, given that she clearly cares for her as well?

@Dominic Bounds And what about those who never read the books? I'm not saying that it was a great decision for the show, but honestly, it's really not that big of a deal. Chill out. I was just pointing out that she seemed misleading to people who have never watched the show.

Claiming sunk cost fallacy seems to be a bit of a copout when people acknowledged the problems beforehand and though they were justified because it was leading up to something. It wasn't, the problems were problems and nothing was going to justify them. Also this is just GRRM's writing problem in another media. Drawing out a short story to a trilogy to a heptalogy is going to lead to a lot of padding and a lot of unresolved issues (or hastily resolved issues). Folding Ideas got into this in their video on the "Lost" mysteries in Attack on Titan.

When you where doing a recap on what happened on sesson 7 thats when I started laughing hysterically on how dumb the show has become.
From season 1-5 the characters where smart then season 6 came and its like they bumped their head into something, where season 7-8 showed how dumb they have become.
Thanks Dumb and Dumber for this screw up. Now we are a few mos away from the rise of the Skywalker. Am I excited to watch this movie? Not at all nor do I care if its good or bad.
Dumb and Dumber already subverted my expectations from Game of Thrones and I wont be fooled anymore
